Passionate, engaged, authentic teaching that evolves around what students want and need is not necessarily pretty and often means asking tough questions, struggling with realities, and stumbling over and over. But so often, in an effort to systematize teaching and learning, the realities and HUMANITY of engaging students and teachers in transformative learning experiences can get lost in the shuffle. Curriculum binders are neat, but often not beneficial for the needs of real students. At Fern Creek High School in Louisville, Kentucky, we have banded together as an interdisciplinary cohort of passionate educators who want to dig deep to the heart of teaching and discover from students how to best teach them. We created School Startup (schoolstartup.org), which is a program where teachers form a cohort and use the principles of design thinking to start where it matters--with students--and build from there. School Startup teachers start by shadowing and interviewing their toughest students, then disrupt their own preconceived notions about learning to develop new curriculum, restructure whole classes, or start totally from scratch. In this session, School Startup teachers will facilitate a focus group between attendees and actual students and guide attendees through the process of using interview data to inform instructional design. Prepare to rethink your approach to teaching and to walk away with a plan of action for engaging students and transforming teachers when you return home!
