In 1988, Lisa Delpit noted that “the teacher cannot be the only expert in the classroom. To deny students their own expert knowledge is to disempower them.” (Delpit, 1988, p. 19). Delpit conducted educational research related to hierarchy in schools, and specifically considered the extent to which race impacts the dynamics of power, voice, and agency in schools. Like other educators and researchers over the last three decades, Delpit highlighted the potential, value, and promise of “student voice” as we design, shape, and improve our schools as spaces for deep learning, personal growth, and democratic citizenship.

This 90-minute workshop provides student voice research findings from Forest Hills Northern High School, Orchard View Middle School, and Detroit Country Day Upper School, all located in Michigan. Workshop participants will learn how students: 1) developed questions about their school and secondary education; 2) planned inquiries; 3) applied democratic principles to participation and deliberation; 4) gathered and evaluated evidence; and 5) communicated conclusions and took informed action. The workshop is highly interactive, so that participants continuously engage with both the content and each other.
