Limited Capacity filling up

Our staff from the Office of Innovation for Education (OIE) traveled to New Zealand to visit their competency-based personalized learning schools in October 2017 along with thirty educators from Northwest Arkansas. We brought back a lot of learning on student agency and deeper learning that we'd like to share and integrate with educators working to support deeper learning in the US. For example, schools in New Zealand work to ensure deeper learning isn’t facilitated for learners, but by learners, with others, and for the world. What we saw was students acting as agents of change for deeper learning, in highly-responsive learning environments, that expanded far beyond the walls of the school.

Crystal Beshears, PhD, Innovation Coach and Researcher for OIE and former high school social studies teacher, will bring specific examples of what this looks like in the schools we've visited and how this learning has been applied by the educators on our trip who are in schools in Northwest Arkansas and Schools of Innovation across Arkansas. We will engage participants in expanding and integrating our collective understanding of Student Agency, and will examine how students, working as agents of change, facilitate deeper learning, using participant examples, questions, and experiences. Furthermore, we will examine "how current practitioners might work collaboratively with adult and student learners, and across school networks, to design and spread deeper learning experiences in which learners continue to develop their agency?"
