Experiencing Two Social Emotional Learning Skills to Improve Teacher and Student Capacity for Deeper Learning

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Limited Capacity full

When teachers support their students in intentionally building Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills, students become better equipped to engage in and succeed in rigorous Deeper Learning. “SEL…supports a student’s ability to contribute to and work collaboratively with a group…disagree constructively, provide feedback to one another, and listen respectfully to the input of others.” (Reid, Donique. 2016. http://deeperlearning4all.org/a-softer-side-to-deeper-learning-building-students-social-emotional-skills/
Session participants will experience two social emotional learning (SEL) mini-workshops within the larger session, each time connecting the experiences to enabling engagement in deeper learning for all students. The workshops, in Team Building (Collaboration) and Growth Mindset, will walk participants through a brief rationale of the research behind each SEL skill and its impact on the classroom along with experiential activities to help students practice each skill. For example, team building activities give students experiences in collaborating they may not have a playbook for, enhancing classroom productivity and cooperation, and allowing for a greater sense of safety allowing creativity to flourish. The session will end with a guided process of reflection on how practicing SEL skills provides a runway for deeper learning. Students and teachers will interact throughout the activities together to allow teachers to have immediate feedback from students.
