Undoing Adultism: Making Adult Spaces Worthy of Student Voice

We adults talk about the importance of student voice. However, much of the time the student voice included or heard is merely the result of confirmation bias. How many of us have done the work (with other adults) required to ensure the spaces we inhabit are youth-affirming and "worthy" of students' voices? In this Deep Dive, we will learn what adultism is and how to begin undoing it to (re)create spaces that are worthy of students and their voices. Using examples and learnings from the presenter’s Deeper Learning Equity Fellow Capstone Project, we will hear from students, explore the work adults must do to undo adultism, and design spaces are ready to hear and respond to authentic student voice. Together, we will begin to shift our mindsets, cultivate practices, construct tools, and generate individualized next steps that promote the dismantling of adultism in our shared spaces, moving them to spaces that are inclusive of authentic student voice. In the Deep Dive, we will reflect on our reactions to the readings and use these reactions as a starting point for our work.
