The Power of Student Thinking: Deeper Learning in Elementary Mathematics

In the pursuit of shifting mathematical agency and fostering dialogue that is centered around student thinking, we will explore student solution strategies, analyze student work and consider application in the classroom. Students intuitively solve math problems in ways that demonstrate their conceptual understanding and evolve over time. By considering student thinking, educators are better equipped to orchestrate deeper learning. In this workshop geared for elementary school teachers, participants will experience these strategies first hand and leave with a framework to support increased agency and dialogue in classroom instruction. For exhibition, we will create a supersized framework board with our “Math Vision” statements and our Anticipatory Planning Frameworks for each of the tasks we created.
