Only 11% of low income students graduate college. As a high school, it is often hard to send students off to college knowing the odds are against them. It is time to bridge the gap between high school and college, and imagine the power of bringing deeper, more personalized learning to students higher education transition. In its third year, Da Vinci Extension is a 13th year university transfer and career pathway program for current Da Vinci students who wish to stay at Da Vinci an extra year beyond 12th grade to complete their freshman general education college coursework while gaining on-the-job work experience through paid and unpaid internships in the community -- all at no cost to families. Students in the Da Vinci Extension program are able to engage in a more student centered, student focused curriculum through our co-created curriculum and courses with our higher education partners. By taking traditional courses and making them more personalized, in depth, and relevant to students, college becomes demystified and accessible. Students are supported by coaches, internships, and a cohort model to increase their success and engagement in college. In this deep dive, participants in this workshop will define the problem by looking at student graduation rates and college completion rates, explore the philosophy behind the program, understand legal restraints and opportunities, and imagine, create, and get feedback on designs for a college model that focuses on deeper learning principles and practices for their own students and their own community and context.
