How do we tackle sometimes complicated current events with young children? As a society we need to take a deeper look at whose voices are heard, and take into consideration people and movements we celebrate- but what does that look like with younger children, who do not always have the background knowledge or developmental understanding of historic events? With the current national debate about monuments and who they are dedicated to, we engaged our second grade students in a deep dive into the idea of monuments, voice, and a celebration of unsung American change makers. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a project that can be adapted for any elementary school-aged curriculum that allows students to share understanding through creating a monument for unsung American change makers who do not have a nationally recognized landmark. Participants will engage in a workshop to walk through a project that makes connections to the geography of the United States by exploring various monuments in the country on who/what they were built for, and where in the United States they were built.
